Our Calgary centre – the University of Calgary

Calgary is one of Canada’s leading universities, consistently appearing in the top ten, and in the top 200 worldwide. Founded in 1966, it’s a relatively new institution, and it’s impressive that it has achieved this standing in such a short time. It’s now home to around 30,000 students, and its reputation is particularly strong in science and engineering.

The campus is located just outside the city centre, and it has its own railway station, with quick, cheap connections. On campus, you’ll find a wide range of buildings in a park-like setting. Different types of student accommodation

are provided, and the campus even has its own hotel. For lunches, there’s a central food court, and the sports facilities are excellent.

Our accommodation on campus is in the up-market Yamnuska Hall, which offers high-quality single rooms in an apartment arrangement, each with its own bathroom. Meals are taken quite close by.

Calgary – the city (population: just over 1 million)

Calgary is a modern and vibrant city in Canada’s dynamic province of Alberta. It’s located just east of the Rocky Mountains, which can be seen from the city centre. Fast-flowing rivers cut through the city, and there are attractive parks alongside their banks. Downtown Calgary is an impressive sight, with its exciting modern architecture. At over 1,000 metres above sea level, and sheltered by the Rockies, Calgary has a fresh, dry climate; in the summer, expect hot days with strong sunshine, but chilly nights to follow.

Calgary is famous for its annual Stampede – a sort of Wild West show. Even when the show is not taking place, it’s possible to visit the park where it’s held.
